“Caring, Character, and Community” Podcast Series
To prepare the next generation to become caring and effectively engaged citizens requires a multi-faceted approach. It includes a focus on personal development, professional development, program development and implementation, and on systems change. As part of the CCSR’s focus on personal and professional development of educators, parents, and community leaders, we are pleased to announce our upcoming podcast, “Caring, Character, and Community.”
Semester One of this series will focus on how leaders integrate the ethic of caring, their own and others’ character development, and a commitment to serving the needs of others to guide and inform their leadership in times of crisis. Part One will focus on PK-12 leaders, Part Two will focus on Higher Education Leaders, and Part 3 will focus on leaders of youth-serving, community-based leaders. Each part will include 4 podcasts and an interactive webinar, during which listeners can participate in a Q&A with the leaders who have shared their stories in the podcasts.
Part One, Episode Three: Julie Lawton shares the story of how creating a school that is centered on caring and compassion facilitates positive outcomes in times of crisis.
Julie arrived in Beijing in 1996 as an international elementary school teacher, and is proud to call China home. In August 2005, Julie joined the Beijing City International School (BCIS) as the founding Elementary Principal, a position that she held for 13 years. She also held the dual role of Deputy Head of School until she became the Head of School at BCIS from 2018 until 2021.
In August 2021, Julie was honored to assume the role of Chief Academic Officer for YueCheng Education (YCE), which allows her to continue working with BCIS, which is the founding YCE member institution. In 2014, Julie was honored to receive the ‘Great Wall Friendship Award’ by Beijing Municipal Government, which is awarded to foreigners who have made a significant contribution to China.
Julie’s children graduated from BCIS; Jack (2016), Finn (2018) and Molly (2019) are all proud members of the BCIS alumni network. As all YCE member institutions continue to grow, develop, innovate, and care for all students and adults in their communities, Julie is excited to work with all stakeholders, and can be found around YCE campuses.
